An important aspect of my research involves the investigation of factors that explain variation and change in human languages, especially with respect to their syntax. At the same human language is marked by certain unifying properties (universal grammar), there is a window for substantial variation across human languages, and by having access to a diversity of languages, we have a better chance of understanding precisely which mechanisms allow and at the same restricted variation across languages.
