Indigenous Language Institute Symposium (ILIS)

Beginning in 2010, the annual Indigenous Language Institute Symposium is our flagship event, bringing together language revitalization leaders, educators, and advocates from across the country. This multi-day gathering is a powerful platform for sharing ideas, showcasing best practices, and inspiring collective action. Key features of the ILI Symposium include workshops, panels, a research showcase, cultural events, and opportunities for networking and collaboration. The symposium underscores the critical importance of language preservation and serves as a catalyst for energizing efforts across Indigenous communities.

About ILIS 2025
About This Year's Theme

This year’s theme, "The Healing Power of Language," underscores the vital role that language plays in fostering growth, unity, and healing within Indigenous communities. Language is more than words—it is a living connection to our ancestors, our traditions, and our future.

Through workshops, discussions, and cultural exchanges, the symposium will explore how language revitalization efforts can heal intergenerational trauma, build bridges between youth and elders, and strengthen community ties. By prioritizing language, we honor our identities and ensure that the wisdom and values of our ancestors continue to guide us. This theme encourages attendees to envision a future where language unites generations, inspires resilience, and fosters well-being for all.
